Keys Style Tarpon

These are the traditional keys style tarpon fly that has worked for years and continues to be the go-to fly in many angling situations for tarpon from the Florida Keys to the Gulf Coast of Florida to the waters of Belize and the Bahamas.  For oceanside fish in clean, clear blue water, the Grizzly/Blue is a tough one to beat.  For situations where the sun is getting high in the sky and tarpon are crossing over sandy bottoms, both the Natural and Cockroach are good choices.  Typically, you would want to try to match your fly to the color of the sand bottom.  For light sand bottoms, the Cockroach is best with its tan collar and light grizzly hackles.  For mottled bottoms or dark sand, the Natural would be best because of its natural squirrel hair collar and darker grizzly hackles.  In other situations, including laid-up backcountry tarpon or for low-light situations, the Red/Grizzly and Orange/Grizzly are great patterns that regularly entice big tarpon.
