The Big Hole is heating up, and the Beaverhead opener is coming up
Some unseasonally warm weather caused flows on the Big Hiole River to double in size, but flows are stabilizing and the water is clearing. We caught some great fish today and conditions should improve over the weekend. Don't be too proud to throw big San Juan worms. Streamers are producing fish with cloud cover.
The flows on the Beaverhead are rising as more water is being released from Clark Canyon Dam. The river is full of debris on the days that more water is released. Flows have stabilzed, temporarily, over the last forty-eight hours. Pipe Organ to Barrett's fished well the last two days. We are awaiting the opener from Clark Canyon Dam to Pipe Organ like kids ten days out from Christmas. Fish numbers and size look excellent on the upper stretch according to this spring's eletrofishing data. Saturday the 15th will kick off what is sure to be another great season on the Beaverhead. Don't jump the gun on the closed section, you will get a ticket.
Poindexter Slough is fishing extremely well! Strong baetis hatches are followed up with caddis dry fly fishing in the evenings. The slough is peaking as a fishery, don't miss out. It is a gem as one of Montana's only public spring creeks.
