Beaverhead River - March 26th, 2008
RECORDED:
38 °
FISHING: Great
The Beaverhead is fishing quite good right now. It's open from Pipe Organ Bridge downstream. The name of the game is small nymphing right now, BUT, the BWO's are starting to show up. You can find some good dry fly fishing right now, weather permitting!
We are having an incredible snow year this winter. The Beaverhead drainage is at 125% of normal snowpack. With this amount of snow, we expect Clark Canyon to fill up, and that means more cold water for the Beaverhead browns and rainbows.
It's going to be one incredible summer!
Best Bet Fly patterns:
sz. 18 P.T Cruzers (olive, natural, pink), sz. 18, 20 P.T's, sz. 18 Ray Charles (gray, olive, pink) sz. 20 Tailwater Tiny's (olive, rust, black), sz. 18-22 Zebra Midges (asst. colors), Sparkle Spiders (bwo) sz. 18, Get-R-Dun's (bwo) sz. 18, Smidget's (dk. dun) sz. 18, Quigley's Loopwing Dun, sz. 18, Buggabullies (asst. colors) sz. 2-6.
Mothers Day Caddis Hatch is only a few weeks away!!!
Good Luck!

Big Hole River - March 26th, 2008
RECORDED:
37 °
FISHING: Good
As of today, the Big Hole drainage is at 120% of normal Snowpack! This should make it a story book summer on the Big Hole. We will have lots of water early and late!
Don't forget about April! It is the most overlooked time of the year to fish, and the fishing is great with big, fluffy dry flies!
The Big Hole is finally floatable. There is still some ice on the edges, but no problem getting a boat down. Skwalla's aren't too far away. We just need a few days of warmer temps, and the bugs should start to move. Also, look for March Browns to appear soon.
On the rainy, or snowy days look for Beatis to show. Right now on the warmer afternoons, you can find good midge activity on the surface.
If you are going to fish the Hole this week, you can find some good dry fly action, but, come armed with a good assortment of nymphs. It's still winter in SW Montana. As usuall, bring San Juan's, Zebra Midges (asst. colors) sz. 18-22, Micro May's (olive) sz. 18, Flashback Hare's Ear sz. 14-18, P.T Cruzers (Olive/Brown, Olive) sz. 16-18, Yuk Bugs sz. 4-8, Varigated Stones sz. 8
Good Dry Flies for the box: Sparkle Spiders (bwo) sz. 18, Get-R-Dun's (bwo) sz. 18, Smidgets (dk. dun) sz. 18, Para Adams sz. 16-20, Smith's Black Cripple sz. 20.
Fishing is getting better and better every day, as the grip of winter is trying to loosen up. SLOWLY. But, it's great that we haven't had any warm days yet. We still have ALL OF OUR SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS--AND IT'S SNOWING AGAIN TODAY!!!!

Shhhhhh! Fishing's Hot on the Jeff!
If you want a chance for a truly large Mucho Grande', head to the Jeff. Bring some ammo and a helmet.
Chuck some monster ass streamers. The bigger browns that call the Jefferson home are eating some enormous flies. Sinking lines, deeper runs 5,6,7wt. rods. Not all the big fish are in the deeper water. Lots of fish are going to be on beds, but thats too easy!

Madison River - September 7th, 2007
RECORDED:
72 °
FISHING: Excellent
The Madison is back to its normal Cfs. Lots of extremely good fish found throughout the river. Super fat and full of energy. The big fish are looking up and eating a great assortment of bugs. On our recent trips we have thrown Caddis, terrrestrials, and your usual attractors. As always nymphing has really been producing some real slobs! It's "Hopper Season", and a well presented fly produces lots of victims, but it is also getting to be that time of the year when the browns like to chase things. Twitching and skating big hoppers can get some explosive eats!! Dry dropper is a great technique and avoids a lot of whitefish. Try throwing Big Princes under a hopper, and you might be pleasantly surprised!
Good Flies: Royal Wulffs sz.8-18, Elk Hair Caddis sz.14-18, Royal PMX's sz.8-16, Power Ant sz.11,13, Asst. Hoppers sz.8-14, Prince's sz.8-18, P.T Cruzer's (olive, natural) sz.14-18, Micro Mayflies sz.16,18, MoJo Hopper (tan, yellow) sz.8-12, Fat Albert (tan, yellow) sz.10. Swishers LLS Chernobyl sz.10, Asst. Trudes, Parachute Adams sz. 10-18, Lightning bugs sz. 10-18
