Isla Holbox Fishing Lodge, Mexico

We really like everything about this clasic fly fishing resort.  Isla Holbox, (prononced "eesla ol-bosh") is probably one of, if not the best locations in the the tarpon world that continues to offer an enjoyable opportunity to catch a bunch of baby tarpon, all on your favortie 8 weight fly rod while also providing a golden oppurtunity to catch some truly large tarpon over 100 lbs.!
An ageless small tarpon nursery with thousands upon thousands of acres providing just the right amount of back country marine water for an over abundant and very feisty 5 - 20 lb. fish that thrive here, the area round Holbox is a tarpon fisherman's paradise.  There are snook here too with most running between 3- 8 lbs. and are fabulous fighters on a light weight fly rod.  And then there are the opportunities to fly fish for the truly huge tarpon that show on the front, deeper flats and the thoughts of small 8 weights disappear with big
Photo Courtesy: Isla Holbox12 weights brought into action.  This is one destination were you just may see and possibly hook the next world record tarpon.  We have seen specimens over 200 lbs. rolling amongst the other 2 - 300 tarpon that come to eat off of the coast of Isla Holbox!  And if this is not enough the huge jack crevelle that come here to feed will spice things up a bit.  20 - 30 lb. jack crevelle are common and landing one of these big bulls is a feet in its self!  And to top all this off...some exceptionally large cobia will show in the area at times.  The fishing scene here overall is a very specail one indeed.
Fly to Cancun~  Once you arrive at the airport:  You will be picked up by someone from the Holbox staff and esscorted to a van for the trip to the Island of Hobox, roughly a two hour drive through Mexico's back country where local scenery abounds.

The Ferry Crossing to Holbox~

The Ferry Crossing doesn't take long and before you know it you'll be pulling into the Holbox dock.  The nurmerous tarpon that seem to be always rolling and feeding on the way into the dock area have a way of jump starting an eventful week of fishing.  Once at the dock you will be whisked away aboard one of the local hot rod golf carts.  Down colorerful dirt streets to Holbox Lodge all the while taking in the local flavor that really sets this destination apart from others.  A quiet Mexican island town with an easy going astosmphere.
Holbox Lodge~

The Lodge is perfectly placed  amongst palm trees, the purest white sand in the world (your feet will be in Heaven!) all with a gorgeous beech-front view.  The rooms are first class, each with private bath and are very well appointed.  The scene from the top deck is to die for.  The cooler is filled daily with your favorite beverage (Corona's) and the local Iguana's capture the charm of Holbox.  Our motto - The big lizard doesn't bite, but the tarpon do!
A Typical Fishing Day~
Getting up early to capture the feeding events that lead into a days fishing is the norm here.  Not missing a beat the guides are punctual and ready early to ensure the best possible fishing conditions for their clients.  Travel time to fishing areas depend on weather conditions with most reached in 20 - 30 minutes from the lodge.  If the seas are calm you can rest asurre you will be looking for the massive tarpon that swim the outside margins.  If the ocean is rough a trip to the inside to try your hand at the literally thousands of baby tarpon can be expected and is the perfect thing to do.

Others may get in  your way!

Sometimes fishing plans do have a way of going astray and it is no different at Holbox.  You never know what might show up between fishing destinations and being prepared to capture the moment will work well in your favor.  And if we may say so thes
e pictures illustrate this perfectly.
