New Zealand

New Zealand~

The finest dry fly fishing in the world.......we think so.

There is no place anywhere that sets the standard for all things fly fishing and no place as distinct as New Zealand.  Fly fishing for beautiful and exceptionally large wild rainbow and brown trout is something that all of us should experience at some point in our fishing lives.

~The waters in New Zealand are as pure as Clover Honey!

I arrived in Auckland, New Zealand in 1983.  As I stubbled down the stairway to collect my baggage I noticed my heart rate was quite alive despite traveling for 14 hours on a plane.  After gathering my bags I was puzzled as to why my rods were not with my luggage.  After talking with a Customs agent he pointed me in the right direction and I retrived my precious fly rods.  Why in the hell would an airline loose your bags anyway?

This was my first trip to New Zealand.  I had dreamed of fishing here since I was a young boy.  My dad was a fly fisherman and I grew up reading books and articles by Joe Brooks, Lee Wulff and others.  My dad always wanted to go to New Zealand He loved the beautiful picutres that graced the pages of Outdoor Life.  Joe and Mary Brooks made it look so inviting.  Deep elmerald pools with magnificent brown trout, laying lazily med -stream wating for the first offering of the day.

Later, in 1988, I got to fish with dad, mostly on the South Island, as when we headed to the North Island my folks forgot where to meet us.  But that is another story.

New Zealand is made of two islands, the North and the South.  Although certain topographical features are similar the islands are two of a different kind.   Active valcanos still throw steam into the air around Taupo, and the South Island is a hop, a big skip, and a jump to the Antartic.  Two land bodies which run basically north and south of each other while providing an overwhelming diversity of geographical characters.  Around each bend in the road you just may wonder where you are.  New Zealand is a bend of every country in the world.  And speaking of that bend in the road - you may encounter a band of 7,000 sheep, an impassable bridge, or a road block due to a flood.  New Zealand... a wonderland of excitment
